Yet another legendary act will join us on the 30th of may: one the founders of The Herbaliser, known for their unique fusion of hip hop, jazz, funk and soul, Ollie Teeba will stand behind our decks to show us their impeccable taste and fearsome turntable skills. And from the Hungarian front, Venom and Acid will come to spin their hip hop beats, while Fine Cut Bodies will play a bit of abstract electronica in the Amper Garden.
Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba had a long history in music before starting their shared project, The Herbaliser. Their roots can be found in jazz, funk and old-school hip hop, which they combined with the newest sampling techniques and Jake’s musical knowledge as a bass player – this is what inspired them to make their first recordings.
They have brought their first demo to the well known underground label, Ninja Tune, which started a decade long relationship. They released five albums there and became one of the flagships of the Ninja Tune family. In 2008 they have signed to !K7 Records and then released their latest album at their own label, Department H in 2012. While listening to them, you get the feeling that a soundtrack from a 60’s crime movie is playing with heavy scratches, intelligent rhymes and a lot of experimenting, which quickly made them famous. In the end of the 90’s there was no urban music collector without a hoodie, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow and The Herbaliser disc.
The Herbaliser is well respected among the international scene, which is not a surprise, even their first release, Remedies quickly became a success worldwide. With their second album they ventured towards trip hop, and afterwards they started to experiment with more organic sounds, involving musicians and MC-s while creating a new blend of classical hip hop. Soon The Herbaliser became a band, with stunning live performances featuring heavy sampling and live instruments, which became a sensation over the years. To make things even more interesting, on their albums they have worked together with rappers like Roots Manuva, Jean Grae and Blade, which gave their tracks an even more unique flavor.
Besides their critically acclaimed albums, they don’t have to be shy when it comes to remixes either – they have remixed Coldcut, DJ Food and Raw Stylus tracks among many others. And as for their dj skills, they demonstrated that greatly with Herbal Blend of Solid Steel in 2004 and their mix for Fabric in 2006, and of course, with the hundreds of performances.
With Ollie the hosts of the Soul on Wax nights, Venom and Acid will play from their collection of hip hop beats, while we will focus on the moodier side of electronic music in the Amper Garden. The chief of Chi Recordings will come to Pécs with his Fine Cut Bodies project to show us his deep, abstract and groovy electronica under the stars.
So, on the 30th of may Ollie from The Herbaliser will arrive with a huge pack of vinyls to transport us into a Guy Ritchie movie, and Fine Cut Bodies, Venom and Acid will support him. The entrance fee will be 600 forints, we hope to see you there!
